People with gout need to always remember what foods to avoid in order to avoid the flare-ups or the attacks and in order to treat gout. These would be foods that can increase our body’s uric acid levels, and can thus increase the risks of worsening gout. Gout is a kind of arthritis that results from excessive uric acid levels in the blood.
One of the foods to avoid for people with gout is alcohol. Whether the alcohol is beer or wine, anything that has to do with alcohol is known to have diuretic effects that can lead to dehydration. In turn, dehydration can trigger gout flare-ups. Even if different kinds of alcohol have varying effects, with some causing lesser effects on uric acid levels than others, it would still be safer if alcohol were avoided altogether.
If you have gout, you should also avoid soft drinks. Soft drinks and some juice drinks contain extremely high amount of fructose and sugar. According to various studies, there is a strong relation between the consumption of fructose and a person’s risk of developing gout. These studies also show that those who consumed two or more servings a day increased their risk of developing gout by approximately 80%, which is extremely high! This only concludes that soft drinks can really be that harmful.
Another important set of foods that you should avoid is anything that has bad fats, such as those found in red meat. A healthier option would be the fats found in salmon or mackerel, so these should be part of your diet rather than the red meats.
Although saying “no” to these delicious and tempting foods to avoid for people with gout might be difficult at the start, the long-term effects are very much worth the effort. This list will help you achieve your goal of becoming healthier and of feeling way much better.
