Symptoms and Signs of Gout:
An acute attack of gout usually affects a single joint, most commonly the joint at the base of the big toe, but it can affect other joints including the knee, ankle, wrist, foot and small joints of the hand.
The affected joint is red, swollen and extremely tender; the pain reaches a peak level of intensity within 24 -36 hours. The redness and swelling may spread and can be confused with cellulitis (inflammation of tissues beneath the skin). The pain is so intense that the sufferer may not be able to stand on an affected foot or even tolerate the pressure of bed-clothes on it. Sometimes there is a mild fever.
The first attack usually involves only one joint and lasts a few days. Some people never have another attack, but most have a second attack after the first. After the second attack, more and more joints may be involved, and there may be constant pain due to damage to the joint from chronic inflammation.
Hope this helps.

Gout does run in families and the big toe is the commonest joint to be infected. It can however affect any small joint in the body. Uric acid which in an affected individual has high levels in the circulation, precipitates out into a joint producing, pain, swelling, heat and redness. The identical symptoms can occur in any acute arthritis, so it must be confirmed by blood test. This is best carried out after the attack has subsided. http://medicine. ucsd. edu/clinicalimg/ext…
in extreme s untreated cases the crystals themselves can be seen as ‘tophi’. http://www. hopkins-arthritis. org/other/i…
and the joints become damaged
