Gout can get pretty uncomfortable, but fortunately there’s a very practical cure. The cure is this: drink tons of good, clean water — not mineral-devoid water, however.
Gout has two stages, from what I understand: minor, and major. I don’t believe it will turn into anything very serious, but like I said, it can get pretty uncomfortable. Just drink a lot of water, and it’ll go away in time. Also, remineralizing with a broad-spectrum, liquid mineral supplement with or without trace elements (sea water, concentrated sea water, kelp tea, etc) will help the gout to pass faster. If problems persist, make sure your water isn’t high in things that could worsen gout, like molybdenum. By “high,” I mean above standard (“considered safe”) ppm.
Hope this helped.

Left untreated, gout can be permanently crippling. Do an image search for “gout tophi” for some very scary pictures.
If your family member has bad gout it must be treated, and the sooner the better.
Luckily most gouties can take inexpensive generic drug every day and cure their gout for good.
Nobody likes taking a pill a day forever, but the alternative is much worse.
He should see a doctor ASAP.

Aside from excrutiating pain, Gout can cause tophi – hard lumps of uric acid crystals, which if left alone for long enough can even cause permanent damage and deformity. The crystals can also permanenly damage tissues such as tendons and ligaments in the afftected joints.
The underlying conditions that cause gout can also lead to kidney stones.
Often a gout sufferer will have other health issues as well. For example gout patients are often overweight and so gout is perhaps an indicator that your family member might need to address other issues in their health.
Diet is often the culprit when it comes to gout. As well as foods high in purines (proteins such as red meats, seafood, offal) a diet leaning towards acid rather than alkaline foods can lead to increased risk of gout. If your family member drinks a lot of alcohol they may need to change that too.
Gout doesn’t have to cause permanent damage though. Treating the underlying causes of gout will allow someone to live completely gout-free. It’s not something to panic about that’s for sure. It might require some lifestyle changes and wiser choices, but you can get rid of it.
It always pays to see your doctor as well. There are medications available that can help lower uric acid levels which lead to gout attacks. Not everyone likes medication, but it’s definitely an option.
