ramadan-binge SERI MENANTI: Ramadan binge Submitted by Najiah on Monday, August 9th, 2010 Rusdi Mustapha Monday, August 9th, 2010 11:04:00 Ramadan break fast FAST OR FEAST: A customer (right) makes his choice of food, from a wide spread, in preparation for the break fast LET’s cut to the chase. During the Holy month of Ramadan where Muslims around the world fast, here in Malaysia and for me, the most indelible impression in my mind is that Muslims here go berserk on a food binge. This was what my religious teacher at Kampung Baru mosque taught me about the reason Muslims fast during Ramadan. If he has lied to us about the reasons, then I am very sorry because I can only impart my understanding of what my teacher has given me. He said that during the fasting month we fast so we can feel the sufferings of the poor and the unfortunate who cannot manage to have a square meal each day for him/her and can’t provide the same for his/ her children. During this month, it is incumbent upon Muslims to be aware of their fortune and to reflect on how lucky they are to be blessed, to practice self-reflection and then try to give alms to the poor. When I was growing up, we did not splurge on food and neither did my parents go on a food binge on the “table”. 5. Asalaam Alaikum ..I loose weight during ramadan, I believe if we stay steadfast and focus more on why we are fasting and stay reading Quran and working on correcting, improving and adhering more to the deen we would not focus on the food as much.. I do not believe we feel the pain of the hungry and the weak BUT we count our blessings for we are not in such a state..Allah (SWT) shows us what we take for granted…May Allah (SWT) keep the Ummah steadfast..Amin..
