What you Must Know About Gout and Arthritis

A number of 4 million Gout patients live in the USA today and about 3 million and a half are men as women only develop Gout after menopause. It is generally known that high purines food like fish, mushrooms, beans, animal protein and seafood must be avoided to prevent Gout attacks. Alcohol, especially beer and also dairy products are believed to be implied in the variations of the seric uric acid. But no actual sustained clinical studies were made on how diet can influence the occurrence of Gout.

In one major health study made on different health workers such as dentists, pharmacists or pediatricians, a number of questions they had to answer about their medical condition revealed past Gout attacks in about 2500 of the total 50000 persons. The subjects found to have suffered further Gout attacks were removed from the study.

The food diet, weight, medications and medical conditions were recorded every two years to follow the medical evolution of the subjects. All the ones suspected from Gout were transferred to further testing.

The subjects were divided into study groups according to the amounts of meat, seafood, purine rich vegetables, dairy products and animal protein they ingested. In the next 12 years, 730 new cases of Gout appeared in subjects aged 55-64. Groups with higher consumption of meat and seafood seemed to have double numbers of Gout cases than the lower quintile groups. These products proved to have a major role in the development of Gout.

The groups with a high amount of daily consume in dairy products showed a 50% decrease of new occurred Gout cases than the group with a low dairy use. Subjects that drank at least two milk glasses per day or ate at least a serving of yogurt halved their risk of getting Gout.

The groups consuming high fat dairies, rich purine vegetables and total proteins were proved to have no real involvement to changing the risk of Gout development. Body weight and alcohol consumption did not affect the occurrence of Gout attacks.

The study proved the old medical presumption that meat and seafood products rich in purines strongly increase the risk of Gout. But other factors like alcohol or genetics are also implicated in the occurrence of Gout attacks. Dairy products seem helpful to prevent hyperuricemia as they stimulate the elimination of uric acid into urine. High protein vegetables have a minor protective effect towards Gout as it stimulates the uric acid excretion.

In conclusion, persons with cases of Gout in their families must avoid meat and seafood products and try to consume as many dairy products as they can.

Some Desserts for Arthritis Gout Diet

Gout is one of the various recognized types of arthritis, which can be treated with and a proper arthritis gout diet along with regular exercise and a healthy lifestyle. Gout is a result of having excessive uric acid in the blood.

In order to treat gout, one has to have an arthritis gout diet that can regulate the uric acid levels, but this does not mean that you can’t eat desserts anymore. In fact, here are two desserts that you can try: the Cinnamon Crusted Strawberry Flan and the Cinnamon Carrot Pancakes.

The ingredients for the crust of the Cinnamon Crusted Strawberry Flan are rolled oats, whole grain pastry flour, sugar, ground cinnamon, baking soda, canola oil, and fat-free plain yogurt. As for the filling, you will need strawberry all-fruit spread, vanilla extract, and hulled strawberries. The crust will be baked like a normal piecrust, and then it will be filled with strawberries.

It will then be covered with a mixture of melted fruit spread and vanilla extract brushed on top of the strawberries. This will then be refrigerated until the spread will be jelled. Since cherries are also known for treating gout naturally, you may substitute strawberries with canned cherries or fresh cherries.

The second dessert recipe is the Cinnamon Carrot Pancakes, which can be made with pancake mix, cinnamon, raisins, carrots, and nutmeg as the main ingredients. You will also need brown sugar, salt, and cloves. Combine the pancake mix with water and in another bowl, combine the remaining ingredients. The second mixture will then be gently folded in the pancake batter. This will then be cooked like any other pancake.

Question by Richard E: Are there any diets or foods that would help with arthritis or gout?

Best answer:

Answer by Pierre
Not really. Rheumatic diseases are the result of a defective gene and collagen inflammation, often from a chronic infection. Collagen is present throughout the body, from the eyes, skin and joints to the heart. Hence, the multiplicity of symptoms, depending on the location of the most affected internal organs or body parts.

I have had seronegative rheumatoid arthritis for 27 years. The telling signs of seronegative rheumatoid arthritis are the following:
- Joint pain in the feet (or cracking ankles) in the early 20′s or late teens;
- Fatigue, especially after a moderate exercise like a 30 minute walk;
- Blood test showing a negative or low level of Rheumatoid factor;
- Joint deformities of the fingers, after a few years, a specific sign of rheumatoid arthritis;
- Consecutive X-Rays showing bone erosion after a year or two of illness, a consequence of rheumatoid arthritis;
- Generalized arthritis, involving the whole body;
- Elevated levels of C-Reactive protein and Sedimentation rate, as evidenced in blood tests.

NSAIDs like Voltaren, COX-2 inhibitors like Celebrex, acetaminophen like Tylenol, and codeine are all used to control inflammation and relieve the pain of arthritis.

Regular exercise like walking, biking and swimming is also helpful for most patients. Make sure that you are not overweight as carrying too much weight can only increase the pain of arthritis in the supporting joints of the hips, knees, ankles and feet.

For any form of arthritis, you should consult an Orthopaedist who will order blood tests, joint scans and X-Rays to better diagnose the type of arthritis from which you suffer.

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (http://www.aaos.org) maintains a public online directory where you can find the address and phone number of orthopaedists who belong to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Orthopaedists are listed by geographic location and family name, inside the USA and in most countries.

The membership directory of the AAOS is located at:

Lyme disease could be a possibility. Ask your doctor to test you for the bacteria causing Lyme disease.

Are there any other cases of arthritis or rheumatic diseases among your relatives? Chronic forms of arthritis are usually prevalent in families where a defective gene is passed on by parents to their children.

There are a few hundred types of arthritis and rheumatic diseases. The good news is that science is progressing rapidly in its understanding of rheumatic diseases.

Antibiotics are now used to achieve full remissions for at least 40%, if not 65% of patients with rheumatoid arthritis. For more info, please join our group at:

To conclude, eat sensibly and add daily vitamin and mineral supplements if you want. Punishing diets are just another way to punish yourself for the life you led and the pleasure you had before and since your disease, not a way to get better. You cannot kill bacteria with food or a diet. You cannot disinfect your body with food. It’s just a matter of plain common sense. You cannot starve bacteria out of your body with a starch-free diet or any other special diet.

There are a number of accepted vegetarian or health diets, but you need priorities. Focus all your attention on antibiotics, not diets. Do the most important thing first. And don’t expect that the food you eat will be a miracle cure for rheumatic diseases.

While punishing diets may have a placebo effect on some patients, empowering them through one decision not left to the doctor, it is much more important to get involved by doing the right thing. Pleasure and high spirits help patients to persevere through pain and discomfort. Don’t deny yourself the simple pleasure of eating normally, especially if you are bedridden, home bound or alone. The last thing you need is to feel miserable because of the food you eat.
