Gout Causes – Find Out What Is Causing Your Gout

Identifying gout causes can help you find the appropriate treatment for it. Gout causes are primarily due to the abnormally high level of uric acid in the body. Uric acid tends to form hard crystals in the body joints thus causing pain and inflammation. Pain and inflammation in the joints result to episodes of gout attacks. Uric acid is produced from the breakdown of purines.

Treatment of gout causes is primarily aimed at primary prevention, management and prevention of future attacks.

Primary Prevention

Prevention of gout ultimately rests on the following:

* Adequate fluid intake helps prevent gout attacks. It also decreases the risk of formation of kidney stones.

* Maintaining an ideal balanced weight- Weight reduction can be helpful in reducing recurrent gout attacks. This is best achieved through lessening dietary fat and regular exercise.

* Dietary change that include the reduction of intake of foods that are high in purine. Foods that are high in purine include shellfish and organ meats such as liver, brains, kidneys, and sweetbreads. While meat and seafoods can trigger high uric acid levels, dairy foods and substitutes appears to reduce it.

* Lessening of alcohol consumption- Alcohol has diuretic effects and may contribute to dehydration and cause gout attacks. It can also affect uric acid metabolism. It slows down the elimination of uric acid by the kidneys and causes dehydration that results to the crystallization of uric acid and form in and around body tissues and joints.

Management of Symptoms

Medications are the first line of treatment in the management of gout.

* Pain relievers or other potent analgesics are used to manage pain and inflammation.

* Anti-inflammatory agents are used to decrease joint inflammation. Do not use aspirin as it can increase levels of uric acid in the body.

* Certain medications that lower the presence of uric acid in the blood are ultimately used to treat gout. They are not given though during episodes of gout attacks. Taking these medications during a gout attack can cause the movement of uric acid into other body joints and may cause more pain and attacks in the future.

* Persons who cannot take anti-inflammatory drugs like those who have chronic kidney failure, gastrointestinal bleeding, and heart failure are given corticosteroids instead.

Relief from gout attack usually occurs 4 hours after the initial treatment is started. During gout attacks, do not be surprised if the physician would give a maximum daily dose of one or more medications used for short-term treatment. Doses are then lessened as the symptoms start to go away.

Prevention of Future Attacks

In preventing future attacks, your doctor may prescribe medicines to reduce uric acid buildup in the blood. Make sure that you take the appropriate dosage of medications prescribed by your physician. There are some medications that are taken for the rest of their life.

Vigilance with diet and food intake by low purine diet can prevent further gout attacks in the future. Eat moderately and control your body weight and make sure you get the right nutrients. Drink plenty of water.
Gout causes can certainly be prevented and treated. You just have to know how and follow the treatment procedure vigilantly.

Causes of Gout

Gout caused due to Uric Acid Crystals

One of main causes of gout is the formation of uric acid crystals in the joints, skin, and kidneys. Uric acid is an end product of the body’s chemical processes. Those affected by gout have a higher level of uric acid in the blood than the normal, due either to formation of increased amounts or reduced amounts of acid being passed out by the kidneys in the urine. This uric acid usually remains dissolved in the blood. But when the blood becomes too full of it, the uric acid forms needle-shaped crystals in the joints which bring about attacks of gout.

Excessive alcohol, heredity, rich foods, lack of exercise also causes gout

Other causes of gout are heredity, alcoholic drinks, regular eating of foods rich in protein and carbohydrate, lack of proper exercise, and stress.

Home Remedies

1.    Eat strawberries fresh strawberries also help neutralize uric acid, as do nuts, seeds, and grains, although to a lesser extent. The berries contain high concentrations of vitamin C as well as fruit acids and minerals, like potassium, magnesium zinc, manganese, calcium and iron.

2.    Eat some cherries – Consume cherries and cherry juice often. Cherries are an old nutritional remedy known to help reduce uric-acid levels

3.    Drink water in abundance 8-10 glasses per day will flush way toxins and dilute the uric acid levels.

4.    Increase your consumption of foods such as citrus fruits, berries, tomatoes, green peppers, and leafy greens, which are high in natural vitamin C and the bioflavonoids that reduce inflammation.

5.    Exercise regularly. Regular exercise can relieve or prevent joint pain.

6.    Exercise is needed to nourish the joint cartilage. Regular exercise helps the body remove waste products. Exercise strengthens the muscles around the joint. Developing strong muscles will support the joint more effectively and reduce injuries. Stretching your muscles helps you maintain a range of motion

7.    Apple Cider Vinegar is a wonderful old-timers home remedy, cures more ailments than any other folk remedy. Try 2 tbsp of organic apple cider vinegar mixed with 2 tablespoons of organic honey (2 times daily).within a few hours the pain of gout will start to subside.

Gout Diet

Fast of Orange juice and water

For an acute attack, there is no better remedy than a fast of orange juice and water. In severe cases, it is advisable to undertake a series of short fasts for three days or so rather than one long fast.

All fruit diet

After the acute symptoms subside, the patient may adopt an all fruit diet for another three or four days.

Natural food diet

Thereafter, he may gradually embark upon a well-balanced diet of natural foods, with emphasis on fresh fruits, raw vegetables, and sprouts.

Avoid purine and acid producing foods

The patient should avoid all purine and uric acid-producing foods such as all meats, eggs, and fish; tea, coffee, sugar, white flour and its products; and all canned, processed, and fried foods.

Is Sleep Apnea One of the Causes of Gout?

There are many different potential triggers for gout that you should be aware of if you suffer from the condition. One of the potential triggers that we’ve been asked about recently is sleep apnea. It may seem as though these two conditions are completely unrelated, but in reality, they are connected. The connection was first noticed when sleep apnea patients received treatment for their disorder and they noticed their gout symptoms simultaneously improved.

The reason for this link is believed to be the reduction in blood oxygen during apnea episodes, causing cell disintegration in the body and the generation of uric acid in the bloodstream. The cause of gout is, after all, the presence of uric acid crystals in the joints. Furthermore, during apnea there is an increase in the carbon dioxide percentage within the blood, making the blood’s acidity level higher and increasing the risk of uric acid precipitation as monosodium urate. This can collect in the joints and can even lead to an increased risk of developing kidney stones.

This effect is very similar to what happens within the cells when excess alcohol is consumed. And it should be noted that drinking alcohol can cause sleep apnea to become more pronounced. Therefore, gout sufferers with sleep apnea have two major reasons to avoid drinking alcohol.

Other links between sleep apnea and gout include show up in the fact that not only are primary gout sufferers demographically the same as the primary sleep apnea sufferers (middle-aged, overweight men), but sleep apnea and gout are also both much more common among women who have been through menopause. Also, both gout and sleep apnea are associated with people who have a larger neck circumference.

Most notably, though, is that gout attacks are the most common while asleep, indicating that sleep has an impact on gout attacks and sleep disturbances and conditions may also influence the causes of gout attacks.

Until recently, gout and sleep apnea have been treated separately. However, many sleep apnea patients who implement treatments for that condition find that their gout improves at the same time.

The treatments for sleep apnea include preventative actions, such as avoiding sleeping on one’s back. When sleeping on the back, the airway can become constricted and is more likely to close, causing the oxygen levels in the blood to be lower than in other sleeping positions. Therefore, changing the way you sleep can help to prevent gout attacks simply by increasing the overall blood oxygen level. Other sleep apnea treatments can include a pressurized CPAP mask or surgery.

No matter the final remedy, improvements to a patients sleep apnea problem ensures that blood oxygen levels remain high, minimizing uric acid and monosodium urate precipitation and therefore gout flare ups.

So, if you’re suffering from gout, you may want to check to make sure that you are not also suffering from sleep apnea, as it may be one of the causes of gout aggravations in your body. Then you will be able to look into both sleep apnea treatments and remedies for the gout itself. Speak to your physician about undergoing a sleep study to determine if you have sleep apnea or not.

If you’ve suffered from a gout attack or two now is the time to take action to stop the attacks in their tracks and discover effective preventative steps before your uric acid levels get out of hand.

In about 90 percent of all cases, gout is very common in men above 40 and in menopausal women .gout is as a result of too much uric acid in the blood. Uric acid is a chemical that is a natural part of the normal breaking down and building up of food and body tissue. Usually uric acid is dissolved in the blood but when it is high some microscopic crystal may be deposited in the joints. This crystal set up an acute inflammation causing gout.

As a result of this physiology, gout is common in those with hyperuricaemia-being condition of high level of uric acid. However even when is abnormally a condition referred to as hypouricemia, it can cause a gout attack too. Causes of gout can be classified as either primary -arising spontaneously or from an obscure or unknown cause or secondary -as a result of complication of other medical condition

In primary causes, high level of uric acid as a result of diet rich in protein, fat and alcohol which form a crystal at joint thus causing gout. Typically, person with gout are those predisposed to diabetes and hypertension and at higher risk of heart diseases .some of drugs used to treat high blood pressure can precipitate attack of gout.

Secondary gout is a complication of other medical condition .Such condition that commonly result in gout include metabolic syndrome and leukemia .It can also can develop as a co-morbidity of other diseases including polycythaemia, intake of cytotoxics, obesity, diabetes, hypertension, renal disorders and hemolytic anemia.
