Gout is a common, painful form of arthritis. Gout is a condition in which the body has a problem in the handling of uric acid. Uric acid is a waste product that naturally occurs in the body. It is normally flushed from the body by the kidneys through urine. It causes swollen, red, hot and stiff joints. Gout occurs when uric acid builds up in your blood. Men are more likely to get gout than women are, but women become increasingly susceptible to gout after menopause. Gout usually attacks the big toe however, it also can affect other joints such as the ankle, heel, instep, knee, wrist, elbow, fingers, and spine.

In some cases, the condition may appear in the joints of small toes that have become immobile due to impact injury earlier in life, causing poor blood circulation that leads to gout. It occurs more frequently in countries that have a high standard of living. Approximately one million people in the United States suffer from attacks of gout. Gout affects up to 500,000 Canadians. Men who develop gout usually do so between the ages of 30 and 50. Women are more likely to develop gout after the age of 60. The most common type of medicine used to treat an acute attack of gout is nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

These drugs help reduce the pain and swelling of joints and decrease stiffness. If you think that diet acts as a trigger for your gout attacks, changing your diet may help, but it is important to talk to your healthcare provider about choosing the right diet for you. Gout diet prevention consists of a prevention diet low purine or modified purine diet may help gout improve. Gout diet prevention puts and emphasis on dairy products, vegetable protein and water intake and a decrease in high purine foods. A low-purine gout diet is often prescribed for individuals with gout. Purine is a compound that is mainly found in animal protein which is metabolized to uric acid in the body.

A low-purine diet and medications are commonly used to treat gout. Purines are mostly found in foods which are high in protein and fat content. For breakfast, take low-fat protein foods. High-protein foods that are low in fat have been found to be safe. Include lemon juice at lunch for cleansing. Lemon juice is filled with vitamin C and antioxidants to help flush your body from unwanted uric acids. Grilled or baked lean meat, wrapped foil to retain moisture, is ideal for dinner. Pair with potatoes and steamed spinach. After dinners make sure to have a bowl of cherries, berries or grapes on the side.

Treating Gout With Diet to Help Prevent Recurring Gout From Damaging Your Health

When treating gout it’s important not only to treat the symptoms, but also to prevent recurring gout. And diet plays a key role in this. Discover here which foods to avoid in treating gout with diet.

Your gout is caused by the presence of uric acid crystals in your joints. These can form when you have retained high uric acid levels in your blood because your kidneys have not been able to process and flush excess uric acid from your body, or, your body is just producing too much uric acid in the first place.

It is your body’s own metabolizing process that helps to produce uric acid; in particular, the breakdown of chemical compounds in your cells called ‘purines.’ But purines also exist in our foods at various concentrations. So the very food your eat adds to the amount of uric acid being produced in your body. The more purines present the more uric acid produced.

So, as gout sufferer, you need to determine if your present diet has too many foods that are high in purines. If so, then you need to eliminate, or at the very least, seriously reduce your intake of those foods. You also need to seek out relatively low purine foods and add more of these to your diet.

You’ll need to avoid foods within the following; fatty red meat, game, offal (organ meats), shellfish, some fish, poultry, legumes, gravies, and yeast. Although not a food, you also must avoid alcohol: Beer in particular is a well known trigger for gout.

Low purine foods that form a good gout diet are; low-fat dairy produce, green leafy vegetables (but not cauliflower, asparagus or spinach), high vitamin C foods, essential fatty acids and complex carbohydrates. And eat plenty of fresh fruit, particularly cherries.

A healthy diet is very important in treating gout, particularly because frequent gout attacks over time can damage you health. In particular, leaving you with permanently damaged joints and kidney problems, such as agonizing kidney stones. There is also some evidence of high blood pressure.

And there’s more, because you also need to look into other important issues surrounding gout, such as your weight, lifestyle, medications you may be on, underlying conditions, family history of arthritis / gout, etc.

You’re in luck though. There’s a special gout report available online [see below] that has all the information you need in one place. It is what thousands of ex-gout victims worldwide have successfully used to prevent their gout returning. It also contains a special 2 hour gout pain relief program.

And it uses fully-researched, totally natural methods. So that you benefit two ways: (1) you get rid of your excruciating pain very fast, and, (2) you prevent your gout returning, so that you reduce the risk of permanent damage.

Gout Prevention Diet

A lot of gout suffers are interested in following a gout prevention diet. Someone with gout can sometime be the butt of jokes, but it is no laughing matter. It used to be called the disease of kings, as it seemed to effect only royalty and the upper classes, as they were the only ones wealthy enough to eat a meat-rich diet. Nowadays gout can strike just about anyone, which is why a lot of sufferers are interested in following a gout prevention diet to ward off that next attack.

So the key is the prevention of the build-up of excess uric acid in the blood. And since uric acid is formed out of purines, as a gout sufferer, you must reduce the amount of purines you consume through your food. To start with you need to be able to identify what these gout foods are. Luckily, for the most part, purine-rich foods are also high-protein foods so they are perhaps more easily identified that way.

Other high levels of purines can be found in fish like herring, and mackerel, and some dry beans are also troublesome. Other meats are not as bad, but they still have higher numbers of purines. It is a good idea to limit meat, fish, and poultry foods to about six ounces a day.

Cut some calories! Did you know that Americans generally eat twice the amount that is needed during a typical day? Look around you and see how overweight we have become and more prone to gout. Cutting 50 calories a meal will add up to around 15-20 pounds a year! So switch to diet soda, watch the condiments, easy on the chocolate, and you know the rest! With time, gout symptoms will become less and less.

Another way to achieve gout prevention is to maintain a healthy weight. This is helped by using the good diet mentioned above. People who are overweight will typically see their gout symptoms intensified. Obesity is actually known to facilitate uric acid accumulation inside the body. Overweight people are also at a higher risk for having joint injuries when suffering from gout. Losing weight is a great way to treat gout and prevent it from occurring.

A similar belief was once applied to alcohol. It was thought that spirits, wine, and beer were the true cause of gout. Indeed, drinking to excess can be harmful to gout sufferers, especially due to the resulting dehydration of the body. Hydration is especially important to gout sufferers as it allows the body to flush the uric acid out of the blood, preventing its buildup as crystals on the joints. However, drinking alcohol is not a direct cause of gout.

One of the best ways for gout prevention is to alter your diet. This comes from avoiding foods that have high purine in them, and replacing them with foods with lower purine. Typically, foods that are high in protein and saturated fat, are usually high in purine as well. These include red meats, salmon, trout, anchovies, organ meats, chicken, mushrooms, sausages, sardines, herring, alcohol and animal heart tissue.

A well hydrated body is a healthier body and one with a lower chance of getting gout. But even as a gout sufferer, water helps your kidneys to process and flush uric acid out of your system more effectively. Drink at least 2 litres of water daily, preferably 3 liters. But not in one go, small amounts regularly throughout the day.
