Gout is caused by too much uric acid in the blood (hyperuricemia). Hyperuricemia usually does no harm, and most people with high levels of uric acid in the blood never develop gout. When uric acid levels in the blood are too high, uric acid may form crystals that accumulate in the joints. The exact cause of hyperuricemia sometimes goes undiscovered, although inherited factors (genes) seem to play a role. Gout can seem to flare up without specific cause or can be brought on by factors such as being overweight, eating meats and seafood that are high in chemicals called purines, taking certain medications (especially aspirin and diuretics), and drinking too much alcohol.

Question by surfmum: Can having gout cause high sugar levels in blood or vice versa.
I have been feeling exhausted lately and a bit sick in the mornings then I took gout in my fingers went to GP and he did a random blood sugar test. Now he wants a second fasting one as my first was high. I did have a bowl of frosties(reduced sugar) for my breakfast before I had the random one could that have caused it to be high? If so though surely most people must have high sugar levels in the morning after eating cereal.Anyway could it be diabetes?

This sounds more like pre-diabetes type II. For sure the cereal affected the random test. Exhaustion is another sign. Are you thirsty a lot? Void a lot?
Fasting is much more accurate. Gout is a elevated level of uric acid in the blood affecting the extremeties, usually the lower ones. Very easily controlled with a maintenance dose of allopurinol 300 mg. Ask your doctor.

You poor dear, gout is very painful. Gout is a medical condition that usually presents with recurrent attacks of acute inflammatory arthritis (red, tender, hot, swollen joint). It is caused by elevated levels of uric acid in the blood that crystallizes and deposits in joints, tendons, and surrounding tissues. Gout affects 1% of Western populations at some point in their lives.
Treatment with NSAIDs, steroids, or colchicine improves symptoms. Once the acute attack has subsided, levels of uric acid are usually lowered via lifestyle changes and long term prevention with allopurinal.
Gout is not related to diabetes.
I have a 90 year old relative who has occasional episodes of gout (takes allopurinal) and has never had any signs of diabetes. No-one else in the family has diabetes, and my relative has a healthy lifestyle as far as he can at his age – eg, healthy diet. You have to avoid certain foods – but only about 12% of gout is attributed to dietary causes. This includes a strong association with the consumption of alcohol, sugar, and meat and seafood. Dairy products, vegetables, and total proteins intake however do not affect the occurrence of gout. Gout is also associated with underexcretion of uric acid and can be genetic.
A sedentary lifestyle also increases the risk of developing gout.
The pain problem with gout is the excess uric acid being deposited as crystals in the kidneys which can lead to kidney stones.

Gout is VERY common. And no, uric acid must be present because those crystals that are built up around the joint are caused by elevated levels of uric acid. Gout hurts like hell. I am a 28 year old healthy female. Other than thyroid disorder and HBP no underlying health issues. I had gout about a month ago in my left toe. It is really painful. You will be given Prednisone (if that doesn’t work, you’d start another round of steroids but it’d be a different medication) and usually some pain medication. Cheese, milk, foods high in fat, certain veggies can cause gout. It’s not very common though in young people unless you have something else wrong with you. Have you had blood work done? What were the results?
