I’m often asked this and my reply is always the same; that it’s not just what you eat that helps get rid of the gout, but more importantly, what you don’t eat. Let me explain…
GOUT CAUSES
Your agonizing gout is caused by crystals in your joints that have formed out of you having high uric acid levels in your bloodstream. But uric acid is actually a byproduct of chemical compounds called ‘purines’ that are part of the metabolizing process in your body. When these breakdown as part of this process, uric acid is produced.
Your kidneys then take up this uric acid, process it and then excrete excess from your body. But sometimes your kidneys can get overwhelmed by the amount of acid being produced, or, they just don’t work efficiently enough for some reason. When this happens excess uric acid is retained and you finish up with high levels in your blood, leading to crystal formation and gout.
PURINES IN FOOD
Gout and diet are linked. As well as being in your body cells, purines are found at varying concentrations in your food. So you see that you are continually adding purines to your system. But, as a gout victim, you need to reduce your uric acid to get rid of gout, so you need to reduce the amount of purines being ingested.
Now, as I said before, purines exist at varying levels or concentrations in our foods. So your first step is to identify which foods are high in purines and which are relatively low in purines. And guess what? You need to avoid the foods that are high in purines, and, replace with those that are low in purines. In this way you formulate a good gout diet for yourself.
FOODS TO AVOID TO HELP GET RID OF GOUT
Generally speaking, foods high in purines are also foods that are high in protein, for example; offal / organ meats such as liver and kidneys, poultry like duck and goose, fish such as herring and sardines, shellfish like mussels and scallops, and also yeast and yeast products.
GOOD FOODS TO HELP GET RID OF GOUT
On the other hand, your good foods to help get rid of gout are things like; essential fatty acids food (e.g. tuna, nuts, seeds, flaxseed, etc.), high vitamin C (e.g. red bell peppers, red cabbage, potatoes, etc.), green leafy vegetables (but not spinach or asparagus), low-fat dairy produce (yogurt, milk, cheese, etc.), and complex carbohydrates (e.g. breads, cereals, rice, pasta, as well as fruits and vegetables).
OTHER IMPORTANT ISSUES TO BE CONSIDERED IN GETTING RID OF GOUT
A good diet for gout is very important in helping to determine whether you’ll keep getting gout, or, whether you’ll be able to eliminate it. But there are several other important things that you need to address as well. These are things such as your weight, your lifestyle, any underlying medical conditions, your family history of arthritis / gout, etc.
As well as getting rid of the symptoms of a gout attack, you also need to prevent recurring gout, as this may cause kidney problems and even permanent joint damage, if they occur frequently enough over a sufficient period.
You’re in luck though. There’s a special gout report available online [see below] that has all the information you need in one place. It is what thousands of ex-gout victims worldwide have successfully used to prevent their gout returning. It also contains a special 2 hour gout pain relief program.
And it uses fully-researched, totally natural methods. So that you benefit two ways: (1) you get rid of your excruciating pain very fast, and, (2) you prevent your gout returning, so that you reduce the risk of permanent damage.

1. Gout is usually caused by increased uric acid in the system. He needs a blood test to determine this, then a special diet to avoid ( or help to) future episodes.
2. Usually a medicine called Allopurinol is used to treat acute attacks. Again, by prescription.
3.. Ibuprofen, 800 mg twice a day, WITH FOOD may provide some pain relief, assuming he has no reasons not to use it (liver disease, coumadin therapy, etc).
4. Some people swear hot soaks help, I don’t really see the proof of that. Don’t wear tight socks or shoes.
5. He needs to see a doctor. No options. Free clinics are available in most states for those who can’t pay or have low or limited income and coverage. Good luck! Lori

Gout Treatment Options: Do Natural Gout Treatments Really Help Reduce Symptoms?
Gout occurs naturally. Natural gout treatments work naturally, making them a legitimate gout treatment option. Gout is also called metabolic arthritis. The important word here is metabolic. The kidneys are not metabolizing uric acid effectively, resulting in an excess of uric acid in the blood. This leads to crystalline deposits in the small joints, usually the toes, ankles and knees.
The build up of these crystals causes debilitating inflammation. The scary part is without a gout treatment option, either by natural treatments or a doctor, these crystalline deposits can increase in size and burst through the skin.
Three-fourths of all people who have gout complain gout profoundly impacts walking. Nearly as many people (roughly 71%) cannot comfortably put on shoes. 70% are forced to give up recreational sports and exercise. Is it any wonder gout sufferers investigate treatment options, whether chemicals or natural gout supplements?
There’s more statistical information about the significant impact of gout. Slightly more than one in five (21 percent) gout patients have missed work in the last year due to a gout flare. Nearly one in four (23 percent) had to miss seven days of work, sometimes more.
Alternative medicine, often referred to as natural medicine, created effective gout treatment options. It isn’t difficult to find various natural gout treatments capitalizing on all-natural ingredients to offer non-chemical alternatives to costly prescription drugs.
But do these natural gout treatments really help?
The latest over-the-counter treatment options are designed to help the kidneys function well, performing the totally natural function of ridding the body of uric acid and the threat of buildup in joints. They are generally sold over-the-counter because the non-artificial ingredients in natural gout treatments do not require a doctor’s supervision.
All gout treatment options are considered maintenance therapy. You will have to take your medicine every day, whether it’s a natural gout treatment supplement, or a prescription pill such as colchicine. Gout is a chronic ailment that never disappears. The cost of daily home natural gout treatment over a lifetime can be significantly less expensive with a natural gout treatment option replacing prescription chemicals.
Long before pharmacists developed drugs as a treatment option, desperate sufferers attempted natural options using such organic remedies as fruit juice fasts and drinking the juice of green beans. All attempted to influence the kidneys and the metabolizing of uric acid. Additionally, taking these natural treatments in fluid form diluted uric acid in the blood and urine.
Chemists developing natural gout treatment options simply extended home remedy thinking to develop new, natural supplements. Many over-the-counter natural gout treatments also utilize holistic ingredients to soothe the pain of gout.
This is important if you dislike the idea of taking more than one pill as a treatment option. When doctors prescribe the latest drug, they still recommend over-the-counter pain medicines alongside. Newly-developed natural gout treatments incorporate pain relief components. One pill per day, for the rest of your life, to encourage optimum kidney function and pain relief, may be a gout treatment option you prefer.

HELP. Gout: WHAT IS the homeostatic control mechanism that is imbalanced and why it is imbalanced?

Question by Jen: HELP. Gout: WHAT IS the homeostatic control mechanism that is imbalanced and why it is imbalanced?
For my paper, gout can be an example of homeostatic (human) imbalance. (I have most of the paper done but I have two parts I need help with.)
-1. For this condition, what is the homeostatic control mechanism that is imbalanced and why it is imbalanced?
-2. Is negative/positive feedback involved? If so, how?
Best answer:
Answer by ScottD
It’s usually caused by hyperuricemia. This is an increase in the production of uric acid in the blood. So, you need to look at some of the causes of that to see why it’s imbalanced (i.e. what homeostatic control is off). Hypertension could be a common cause of this. Diabetes and renal insufficiency could be another potential cause.
These could be caused by lifestyle or genetics.
I’m pretty sure this would be considered positive feedback because it is similar or like an inflammatory response because gout can be presented as red, hot, and swollen. In positive feedback systems, something is usually amplified.

Question by XxVeGaNjUsTiCexX: Who can help me disprove that gout (metabolic arthritis) is not caused by a vegan diet?
I’m trying to do research to disprove a popular myth that people who follow a vegan/vegetarian have have a higher risk of getting gout (metabolic arthritis). If some one could provide a link to a website that provides such information, I would greatly appreciate it.

So Uric Acid is what causes gout. Purines metabolize into uric acid. Foods that are high in purines include meat and fish. A study was actually conducted by Choi (im not really sure who this is but im sure you can dig a little deeper) which showed that meat purines put us at a larger risk for gout where vegetable purines dont have any effect on our risk.

Let’s first look at what causes gout. The symptoms of gout are caused by too much uric acid in your blood that can form needle-like uric acid crystals in your joints. Where does uric acid come from? It’s a byproduct of the breakdown of compounds called ‘purines’ which occur quite naturally in our body cells and in some of our foodstuffs.
So if you think about it, if high uric acid levels lead to gout, we need to lower these levels in our bloodstream. And since these come from purines we need then to reduce purines in our system. And as purines are found in some of our food a good starting point for any gout help treatment is to reduce the amount of purines we consume through our food.
And as you are probably already suffering from gout symptoms right now, we then need to think about how we can cleanse our system of excess uric acid and the crystals that are already deposited in your joints, and get rid of the pain.
Taking these two approaches into account, the following are 3 simple home-based gout self-help remedies that you can start on right away:
1. Avoid purine-rich foods like, game, red meat, poultry, shellfish, peas, beans, lentils, broth, mushrooms, cauliflower, asparagus, etc. And avoid alcohol like the plague.
2. Eat at least five helpings of fresh fruit and / or vegetables per day to help flush uric acid from your system.
3. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to act as another important flushing agent. Some experts recommend at least 12 eight ounce glasses per day.
Effective though these natural remedies are, they are only part of the gout help puzzle. Gout is fairly complex and every individual reacts differently. You need to investigate other controlling issues such as your weight, any existing medical conditions, family history, general health issues, etc.
The key here is to find a way to prevent your gout returning, since frequent gout attacks can leave you with permanently damaged joints.
You’re in luck though. There’s a uric acid gout report available online that thousands of ex-gout victims worldwide have successfully used to prevent their gout returning. It also contains a special 2 hour gout pain relief program. And it uses fully-researched, totally natural methods.
So you benefit two ways: (1) you get rid of your excruciating pain very fast, and, (2) you prevent your gout returning, so that you reduce the risk of permanent damage.
