I have been on several different meds for years, I just have heard that there are some natural, non prescription medicines that work really well..Thank You for any help.

I would suggest the anti-inflammatory ones like Aleve and Motrin.

You can try ones with ibuprofen (eg Motrin, Advil) or acetaminophen (eg Tyleonol).
Sometimes with gout you need prescription medication..

In about 90 percent of all cases, gout is very common in men above 40 and in menopausal women .gout is as a result of too much uric acid in the blood. Uric acid is a chemical that is a natural part of the normal breaking down and building up of food and body tissue. Usually uric acid is dissolved in the blood but when it is high some microscopic crystal may be deposited in the joints. This crystal set up an acute inflammation causing gout.
As a result of this physiology, gout is common in those with hyperuricaemia-being condition of high level of uric acid. However even when is abnormally a condition referred to as hypouricemia, it can cause a gout attack too. Causes of gout can be classified as either primary -arising spontaneously or from an obscure or unknown cause or secondary -as a result of complication of other medical condition
In primary causes, high level of uric acid as a result of diet rich in protein, fat and alcohol which form a crystal at joint thus causing gout. Typically, person with gout are those predisposed to diabetes and hypertension and at higher risk of heart diseases .some of drugs used to treat high blood pressure can precipitate attack of gout.
Secondary gout is a complication of other medical condition .Such condition that commonly result in gout include metabolic syndrome and leukemia .It can also can develop as a co-morbidity of other diseases including polycythaemia, intake of cytotoxics, obesity, diabetes, hypertension, renal disorders and hemolytic anemia. Clinically it is important to distinguish gout from other similar diseases such as chondrocalcinosis which is as a result of deposition of calcium pyrophosphate

What is Gout?
Gout is known for severe pain attack that usually occurs during the night and that most of cases affects the big toe. Mostly it affect two parts for every patient, the second most common part is elbow which is normally characterized when it gets swollen and unable to perform simple tasks.

A friend of mine from Pa. goes up on the mountain in the summer and gathers a certain herb that does wonders for gout. It is not a bitter bad tasting herb like some I have tried. The problem is, she has no idea what it is called. She only knows what it looks like. Obviously she can’t go get some for me in the winter. Does anyone have a clue what it might be?

I am from PA. If you can get a picture or a description that would help.
But I am wondering if it is celery seed. That is common here and it also helps with dissolves urates, So does Dandelion Leaf and that is a weed also here in PA.
Celery Seed you can get at any homepathic shop..

my dad has very bad gout and it affects him mostly in his elbows and knees. From what he has told me, gout is where your joint swells up and there is a lot of pressure and pain.

You will have a swollen big toe on one or both feet. The only way to know for sure it is gout is to go the to Doctor and he will give you a uric acid blood test.
