Cherries contain anthocyanins which have anti-inflammatory properties. Some studies point to cherries (and concentrated cherry juice from health food shops) as being able to lower uric acid levels in the body as well.
During an attack, some experts suggest eating between 30 and 40 cherries every 4 hours. This seems a lot to me, especially since some researchers say that 20 cherries is equivalent to 1 NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, e.g. indomethacin, naproxen, etc).

(2) DRINKS LOTS OF WATER

Fruits like oranges and tangerines, and vegetables such as potatoes, red cabbage and red bell peppers are rich in vitamin C. You can also take vitamin C in supplement form, and, this is especially beneficial during an attack. Talk to your doctor about the correct vitamin C supplement dosage, because too much can change uric acid levels too quickly and actually make the attack worse.

Gout is a common type of arthritis caused by an increased concentration of uric acid (the final breakdown product of purine-one of the units of DNA and RNA) in biological fluids. In gout, uric acid crystals are deposited in joints, tendons, kidneys, and other tissues, where they cause considerable inflammation and damage. Gout may lead to debilitation from the uric acid deposits around the joints and tendons, and kidney involvement may result in kidney failure.
The first attack of gout is characterized by intense pain, usually involving only one joint. The first joint of the big toe is affected in nearly half of the first attacks, and is at some time involved in over ninety percent of individuals with gout. If the attack progresses, fever and chills will appear. The first attacks usually occur at night and are usually preceded by a specific event, such as dietary excess, alcohol ingestion, trauma, certain drugs (mainly chemotherapy drugs, certain diuretics, and high dosages of niacin), or surgery.
Gout is the result of either increased synthesis of uric acid; reduced ability to excrete uric acid; or both over production and under excretion of uric acid. Several dietary factors are known to be trigger gout, including consumption of alcohol, high-purine-content foods (organ meats, meat, yeast, poultry, etc.), fats, refined carbohydrates, and excessive calories.
Alcohol increases uric acid production by accelerating purine breakdown. It also reduces uric acid excretion by increasing lactate production, which impairs kidney function. Elimination of alcohol is all that is needed to reduce uric acid levels and prevent gouty arthritis in many individuals.
A low-purine diet has long been the mainstay of dietary therapy for gout. Foods with high purine levels should be entirely omitted. These include: organ meats, meats, shellfish, yeast (brewer’s and baker’s), herring, sardines, mackerel, and anchovies. Intake of foods with moderate levels of protein should be reduced as well. These include: dried legumes, spinach, asparagus, fish, poultry, and mushrooms.
Obesity is associated with an increased rate of gout. Weight reduction in obese individuals significantly reduces serum uric acid levels. Weight reduction should involve the use of a high-fiber, low-fat diet, as this type of diet will help manage the elevated cholesterol and triglyceride levels that are also common in obesity.
Refined carbohydrates, fructose, and saturated fat intake should be kept to a minimum. Simple sugars (refined sugar, honey, maple syrup, corn syrup, fructose, etc.) increase uric acid production, while saturated fats decrease uric acid excretion. The diet should focus on complex carbohydrates such as legumes, whole grains, and vegetables rather than on simple sugars.
Liberal fluid intake keeps the urine diluted and promotes the excretion of uric acid. Furthermore, dilution of the urine reduces the risk of kidney stones. Drink at least 48 ounces of water each day.
Cherries, hawthorn berries, blueberries, and other dark red-blue berries are rich sources of anthocyanidins and proanthocyanidins. Consuming one-half pound of fresh or canned cherries per day has been shown to be very effective in lowering uric acid levels and preventing attacks of gout. In addition to consuming anthocyanidin- and proanthocyanidin-rich berries, extracts of bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus), grape seed (Vitis vinifera), or pine bark (Pinus maritima) can be used. The typical dosage recommendation for these flavonoid rich extracts is 150 to 300 mg daily.

Take the medication his doctor prescribed him and change his diet – it should be purine free. His doctor should give you a list of foods to avoid and foods that are ok to have.
He should stay away from A LOT (lettuce is ok) of green vegetables and red meat.
I don’t have the list in front of me right now, but there’s info on the internet as well to help you.

10 Natural Ways to Treat a Gout Attack – Treatment For Gout That Works
Uric acid becomes a byproduct when food is consumed and processed within the body. Under normal conditions the kidneys work to flush out the excess acid. But when uric acid builds up, it is deposited in the joints of the body where it forms crystal. These crystals aggravate the surrounding joint tissue that leads to swelling and pain. Gout often occurs overnight but may take weeks to disappear.
If you suffer from this debilitating disease, there are some natural methods to treat your next attack and help reduce the length of the attack.
Change your Diet. Fried and fatty foods with trans fat and organ meats are high in purines and lead to a greater production of uric acid. Many gout sufferers are overweight. Losing weight helps normalize kidney function. However, weight loss should be gradual as sudden changes in weight can bring on an attack of gout.
Exercise More. A sedentary lifestyle promotes illness and disease. Exercise increases blood circulation that helps to flush out uric acid before it has a chance to crystallize in the joints. Though many arthritis sufferers hardly feel the need to exercise when in pain, any activity can help alleviate the pain of arthritis, including gout.
Avoid Fructose. High fructose corn syrup is found in many products today, chiefly in soft drinks. But the average consumption of sugar leads to obesity and increase gouty attacks.
Eat more Raw and Unprocessed Food. Fruits, vegetables, fish and high fiber foods work to provide the body with the nutrients it needs to maintain health. Unfortunately, today’s food is highly processed and refined and comes loaded with chemicals and other toxins, a recipe for ill health later in life. 75% of your food should be fresh or raw.
Drink Cherry Juice. If you are suffering from an attack of gout, cherries and cherry juice can help neutralize uric acid. Drink up to 4 glasses of black cherry juice every day. Celery can also help reduce the pain of gout. Dark green leafy vegetables and broccoli help keep the crystals from developing so they can be eliminated.
Eliminate Alcohol. Alcohol only aggravates an attack of gout. While you’re recovering, drink more water to help the kidneys flush out the excess uric acid.
Avoid the use of Aspirin. Besides the gastrointestinal bleeding that can occur, aspirin can raise uric acid levels.
Get on a Kidney and Bladder Cleanse. As today’s world is filled with pollutants and toxins, everyone needs to get on a detox program. Constipation, flatulence and other stomach and intestinal disorders prevent toxins from being eliminated. Gout, arthritis, kidney and bladder stones require a full body cleansing.
Take Vitamin C. Also known as ascorbate acid, vitamin C with bioflavonoids and rutin can help relieve gout pain. Take a quarter teaspoon in water every four hours for the first week. Switch to 5000mg daily for the next month until relief is permanent.
Check with Your Doctor. Your high blood pressure medication can lead to the creation of uric acid crystals in the joints. Allopurinol is commonly prescribed to help prevent the onset of a gouty attack but the drug needs to be discontinued once you are having an attack.
If you are suffering from gout you want to take immediate steps to relieve the pain. But once the pain is gone, you need to keep following these steps to insure you never have a recurrence again.
