There is no cure for gouty arthritis, only management. However, it can be managed well with a combination of medication and proper diet. Antigout medications, such as allopurinol (Zyloprim), colchicine, probenecid and sulfinpyrazone (Anturane) are prescribed prevent the reabsorption of uric acid by the body. Eliminating prurines from the diet is an important part of treating and managing gout. Prurines are converted to uric acid and this is, in turn, converted to sodium monourate crystals that lodge in joints, particularly at the great toe.
