Check with Wikipedia, but I believe it is caused by excessive uric acid in your body. There are drugs that can help you get rid of the excessive uric acid buildup. You’ll have to see a doctor, though.
It used to be that people who ate a lot of rich foods got gout. Do you eat a lot of beef? It’s usually diet caused, but not always. Other things can cause it.

Gout is a high extremely painful concentration of uric acid crystals in some joints mostly big toe or knee. You get it by eating a one sided diet of red meats, red wine and alcohol among other things. Therapy: rest, diet, lots of liquids and specific medicine.
